Events and happenings
These pages will list and highlight upcoming events that have a vintage, retro or simply sustainable theme at their heart. It will start of as a mainly London-centric events calendar as that is where I live, but hopefully will grow into a UK wide resource for people to get an idea of 'what's on' vintagely in their area.
The first event to highlight is the wonderful Vintage Festival, now in its 3rd year. Created by Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway of Red or Dead fame, it has quickly become an institution in the summer festival calendar. I was lucky enough to be at the first Vintage Festival at Goodwood and it was so unique, refreshing and totally unlike the glut of other overhyped, monsterously large, over-rated music festivals that we have become addicted to, it just about took my breathe away. Last year it was held at the South Bank in London, and although that had its own unique feel and vibe, I for one am really pleased that for its 3rd year it will be going back to a rural location – somewhere in Northampton. It's not until July but worth putting in the diary now as tickets do go fast as it isn't a mega-sized event. You can find out all about it and book your tickets by clicking on the image.
Do you long for the nostalgia of the old style picture palace? The orchestra pit providing the soundtrack to the film? The lady with the torch showing you to your seat. Even if all this is a little before your time, the Other Cinema, a sister organisation to Secret Cinema is on a quest to bring back this old style glamour to cinema going. The official launch of the Other Cinema is happening at the Troxy in February. They are showing Brief Encounter, complete with usherettes, live music and acting. It should be fun
Fantastic, organised Swishing events, usually taking in Crystal Palace. Run by the wonderfully named Back to the Fuschia, click here for more details and how to book a ticket for the next event: http://www.backtothefuschia.org/#!events
This looks likely to be a corker of an event. Held in Dulwich College 0n 18th March, the Mid century Modern Dulwich Show it promises to be a a treasure trove of mid 20th century design and period pieces. So if you need that special, unique, vintage piece to finish off your living room or bedroom this is probably where you will find it.
